While we’re on the subject of Captain America: The First Avenger, here’s another obscure reference that many people, comic book fans or not, may have missed.
When we first catch a glimpse inside The World Exposition of Tomorrow that Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes attend with their dates, one of the curiosities we see is appears to be a mannequin sealed inside a glass capsule topped with electrodes. The exhibit is billed as Dr. Phineas Horton Presents: The Synthetic Man.
This is, of course, a reference to Marvel Comics’ – or, more correctly said, their predecessor Timely Comics’ – first superhero, the android Jim Hammond, better known (rather inaccurately) as the original Human Torch and his creator, Professor Phineas T. Horton.
The Human Torch’s appearance in the movie, however, is heavily based on his rendition in Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross’ classic miniseries Marvels.
